Shift for Pastoe_by Scholten & Baijings

The internationally successful design duo Scholten & Baijings have designed the Shift cabinet for Pastoe, a Dutch furniture brand. This cabinet combines a minimalist shape with an expressive use of colours. By working with translucent sliding doors in different colours in combination with a colour gradient, an intriguing play of colours is created when the cabinet is opened and closed. Shift is available in two widths and can be either frame- or wall-mounted. The cabinet will be introduced during the IMM Cologne at Design Post Keulen from 15 to 22 January 2012.

A new tradition: The look of Shift is characterised by the two sliding doors made from translucent acrylate, the reverse of which has been coloured. A choice between a colour gradient and a solid colour is available. “When the doors move across each other, the colours mix, fade or are strengthened,” explains Carole Baijings. This is where it derives its name Shift from.

When they were designing Shift, Scholten & Baijings worked to stay true to the Pastoe design traditions. “This meant creating a clear design with an emphasis on surfaces and volumes,” says Stefan Scholten. The body has been crafted from very thin materials and the handles have been recessed. “This cabinet is easy to combine with others. After all, the company isn’t called ‘Pas-toe’ (a Dutch pun on ‘application’) for nothing. And if customers want, the cabinet can be a subtle explosion of colour in their interiors.” An interesting extra is that the cabinet is also available in a smaller size. “People are living in smaller spaces, especially in the city,” states Scholten.

Designers’ choice: Scholten & Baijings have unmistakeably left their mark on this design. Specially for Shift, they chose six colour combinations as standard and called them the ‘designers’ choice’. The duo added six new colours to these combinations: magenta, light magenta, fluorescent yellow and a shade of grey. “We supplied the pigments for these colours ourselves,” says Carole. One door displays a colour gradient, the other a solid colour. “We decided to give one of the two doors the ‘dominant’ colour and, as it has a layered progression, users can play with it.” In the Designers’ Choice range, the bodies are available in white or grey only. Of course, customers can also choose their own colour combination from the range of Pastoe colours.

Cooperation: Just like Pastoe, Scholten & Baijings make use of grids, light fall and graphic surface divisions. Thanks to their clear attention to craft and tradition, a good balance between design and functionality is achieved. Remco van der Voort, General Manager of Pastoe, says: “We are proud of our Dutch roots and wanted to work with Dutch designers again. Moreover, we were looking for a way to appeal to a new generation without making any concessions to the quality people expect from Pastoe. With its fresh look, Shift fits the bill perfectly.” The cabinet with sliding doors combines a subtle design with the opportunity to play with colour. Its clear design appears timeless, while the bold use of colours provides the cabinet with a contemporary look.

Scholten & Baijings: Stefan Scholten (1972) and Carole Baijings (1973) have been designing together since 2000. They fill their own niche within the world of Dutch product design. Their work is minimalistic while being richly detailed and expressive, thanks to its skilful finishing and their well-considered and powerful palate of colours. The duo works for various international clients and has been distinguished with the following awards: Woonbeurs Pin 2010; the Elle Decoration Award 2011; and various Dutch Design Awards. Additionally, their work has been purchased by well-known museums, such as the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, and the Zuiderzeemuseum in Enkhuizen.

Pastoe: Pastoe furniture has been hand crafted in Utrecht since 1913. They are timeless pieces which make the possibilities for variation in any interior endless, because only simplicity and pure design leave room open for adding one’s personal tastes.
